May 2022: Kahawa Coffee Company

Secret Sip Coffee Club is thrilled to unveil May’s secret roasting partner. Nestled comfortably in Ancaster, Ontario, Kahawa Coffee Company is in the continuous pursuit of balance and quality in every bean they roast, and can trace its operational history back over 40 years! What started as a labour of love, bringing something genuinely missing to the greater Hamilton, Ontario area, has now become a corner stone in the area of exclusive yet affordable specialty coffee from East Africa and specific areas of Colombia.

“With our roots in sourcing and transporting coffee from East Africa and Colombia to across the world since the early 1980s, we have grown valuable relationships with producers, coops and individual farmers to understand their need for a sustainable, well-funded ecosystem. Our team is present on the ground in each country we source from, working with our partners to understand their needs and build quality coffee together. Each time we commit to buying a coffee from a farm or coop, we intend to create a long-lasting relationship that will improve the livelihoods and surrounding areas around the farms. We hope to create a community based on trust and support that sustainably builds quality.”

All of Kahawa’s coffees are certified by different organizations such as Rain Forest Alliance, USDA Organic, EU Organic and Fair-trade. “These beautiful governing bodies focus on sustainability, biodiversity education, and farmers’ rights, which are very important to the team at Kahawa. We believe we are responsible for securing the best scenario for our end-to-end cycle and need to be mindful of our planet.”

Kahawa’s secret roast was an unbelievable single origin from the Huila region of Colombia. Essentially like chocolate milk in a cup, this beautiful roast also exhibited rich notes of caramel. The high elevation and large bean size contribute to this Colombia well-rounded nature. It’s in the name, “Supremo”, the biggest bean size available in Colombia. After the coffee undergoes the fully washed process, the beans are graded according to size by a machine with multiple screens. The 17/18 screens are at least 6.7 millimeters in diameter, allowing more giant beans to fall through.

Secret Sip Coffee Club is so pleased to have partnered with Kahawa Coffee Company to bring you this month's secret roast, and what we believe to be, one of Canada’s best coffees. To learn more about Kahawa Coffee Company, check out their website below:
